What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is a therapy that focuses on the relationship between the alignment of the spine and the function of the body. The word chiropractic, meaning to be “done by hand” is exactly what chiropractors do— use manual adjustments to align the spine with the intention to relieve pain, improve function, and help the body heal itself.

While the foundation of chiropractic is spinal manipulation, it can also include other treatments, including laser therapy and muscle stimulation. Chiropractic care's primary use is to treat pain relief for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care offers a host of benefits with its focus on prevention and whole-body healing. With regular adjustments, your body can be balanced, flexible, and functioning at its best. While most people think chiropractors only perform spinal adjustments and treat patients for acute pain, the benefits of chiropractic go much deeper than that.

Benefits of chiropractic care include:

  • Treats the Cause of the Pain

  • Non-invasive, drug-free treatment

  • Improved Circulation

  • Improves Joint and Muscle Function

  • Aids in boosting immune system, improving digestion, lowering blood pressure, increasing energy, and more

Frequently Asked Questions about Chiropractic Care

What conditions do chiropractors treat?

It’s more than treatment for spinal conditions and poor spine alignment Chiropractors diagnose and treat many different spinal disorders that cause musculoskeletal or nerve pain. One of our chiropractors will perform a physical examination as part of his process of making an accurate diagnosis. X-rays or CT scan studies may be ordered to confirm the diagnosis.

Common types of conditions we treat include:

Are chiropractic treatments safe?

When done properly, chiropractic treatments are safe and natural. In fact, chiropractic is recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential side effects.

The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are minimal. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, however, some may experience mild soreness, stiffness, or aching, just as they would after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.

What type of education and training do chiropractors have?

Chiropractors complete one year of training and a four-year Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree, which is considered a professional or doctorate degree. That’s why they’re called doctors.

Chiropractors are not medical doctors (MDs), but rather licensed practitioners, who are trained with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the musculoskeletal system and the nerves that supply them.

Educational requirements for doctors of chiropractic are among the most stringent of any of the healthcare professions, covering several areas including orthopedics, neurology, physiology, human anatomy, clinical diagnosis including laboratory procedures, diagnostic imaging, exercise, nutrition rehabilitation and more. In total, the chiropractic college curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience.

Do insurance plans cover chiropractic care?

In short, yes. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans. Keep in mind, however, that coverage may only be partial. Please contact us to verify your insurance or take time to examine your policy to find more about your individual health benefits.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment, also referred to as spinal adjustment or spinal manipulation, is one of several treatments that can be used by a chiropractor to help relieve back pain, neck pain, and even pain in other areas of the body such as headaches or sciatica. A spinal adjustment relieves pressure on the spine by repositioning joints and vertebrae to their proper positions. This should only be done by a trained chiropractor who knows how to apply pressure to the right areas to get the best results for the patient's needs.
